St Patricks Day

As we all know, up to about 100 years ago halloween was really only for the kids, adults halloween costumes did not exist and there was no sign that halloween was going to become as big as it is in the grown up world as it is in the kids world. These sort of costume parties started during the french revolution period but were called masquerade balls and in no way linked to the pagan celebration of halloween.The masquerade ball started within the french aristocracy as a way for them to still go out and enjoy themselves but be totally anonymous by wearing a mask. Anonimity was key to these aristocrates beacause otherwise they were in fear of losing their heads. A nightmare that I am sure even michael myers would want to avoid. The most famous aristicrat to suffer this fate and lose her head in the guillotine was Marie Antoinette, the quenn of france.
So as you can see the wearing of a mask and wig dates back centuries, the actual wearing of a costume or outfit actually dates back even farther, all the way to pagan times, after all halloween is a pagan holiday that we have adopted and turned into one of the most popular holidays in any calender year. People worshipping halloween, druids and pagans, would not put on a ghost costume or a sexy costume in the beginning, that came a little later as the holiday / worship day evolved in to the day of the dead.

The Day Of The Dead

The day of the dead started as a pagan worship holiday but evolved into a day when the people would make offerings to the moon, sun and earth in exchange for a good crop that year. The way they did this was to summon the dead, they would try to summon the spirits of loved ones and relatives that had passed on in the hopes of asking them to pray directly to the Gods for help, in exchange the spirits would be given the offerings of wine, meat, bread etc. However what we must remember is that these people were dealing with spirits from the afterlife and did not want to be haunted by these spirits for the rest of their lives, os what they used to do was, they would dress up in costume like outfits and wear masks in the hope that they would not be recognised by the ghostly spirits of their ancestors.
There was also the feeling that if they did not try to disguise themselves fro the spirits, that the spirits would eventually try to or succeed in possessing their bodies. The peoples of this time rationalised that everyone in the afterlife was miserable and wanted to come back to the land of the living to partake in all the joys of life and that they were willing to do whatever it too to achieve this goal, even if it meant possessing one of their relatives.

It was not until centuries later that we began to dress up for fun and that halloween became a holiday without fear, however there are still cults and religions out there today that hold halloween in high regard and worship on that day. The idea that halloween is the devils holiday is completely our own invention, the festivities of halloween never had any attachment to the devil or anything evil until the 1800’s when mysticism gripped the world and going to your local medium was the order of the day. It was around this time that adults halloween costumes and parties began to become popular, a lot of people believe that the grown ups had enjoyed halloween so much as children that they were reluctant to let it go as they grew up, hence the holiday outfit and general fancy dress party began.
Now of course for adults there are tons of themes to dress up as for your halloween party, a sexy costume for the women, a superhero costume for the men, the chioce is limitless and offers us all a unique chance to become someone else or some other character for one night of the year, maybe indulge our ego’s a little too.
